Lockstep for Notion

PRDs and specs in Notion drift the moment they’re edited. Lockstep captures the decisions inside them, gets them approved, and keeps agents in sync with the current truth.

What Lockstep captures from Notion

How the loop runs

Lockstep captures the decision from Notion, routes it to its owner for one-click confirmation that makes it binding, then briefs every engineer and every AI coding agent before they touch the code, and flags any pull request that drifts from it. See the full pipeline on how it works.

How to set up Lockstep for Notion

  1. In the Lockstep dashboard, open Connections, pick Notion, and create the connection.
  2. Allowlist the databases that hold your PRDs and specs, by database ID or search term.
  3. Map the database's status property to document states, so Lockstep knows when a PRD moves to review. Unmapped values are never guessed.
  4. Turn on the product layer in project settings to ingest PRDs into ratified product constraints.
  5. When a PRD moves to review, Lockstep drafts its requirement sentences as constraints anchored to the exact paragraph, and the owner approves them with one click.

Example: a decision captured from Notion

Illustrative example

In Notion

The "Private exports" PRD, Requirements section: "Export links must expire after 24 hours. Internal previews are exempt."

Drafted constraint

Export links expire after 24 hours, except internal previews. Anchored to the Requirements paragraph of the PRD.

Approved record

The PM approves it. When a later PR touches the export-link surface, both sides get flagged before the merge if it conflicts. The requirement also shows up against the work implementing it in the reconciliation view, so the PM can see what has been built against the PRD.

Access & trust

Read-only integration, allowlisted pages and databases.

What Lockstep reads

  • Pages in the databases you allowlist
  • The status property you map, so Lockstep knows when a PRD is in review

What Lockstep never does

  • Pages outside your allowlisted databases
  • Editing your pages or writing status back to Notion: the only write-back is a labeled conflict comment on your own PRD
  • Storing secrets: tokens, keys, and credential-shaped strings are redacted at ingestion

Frequently asked questions

How does Lockstep extract decisions from a Notion PRD?
When an allowlisted PRD or spec moves to review, Lockstep pulls the normative sentences ('must', 'never', 'always' statements with an owner) as draft constraints, each anchored to the exact paragraph. The owner approves them with one click.
What happens when engineering drifts from the PRD?
If a pull request changes a surface governed by an approved PRD rule, both sides get flagged ('may conflict, review both') before the merge, not after launch. You can see PRD requirements against implementing work in the reconciliation view.
Does the PM have to change how they write PRDs?
No. Lockstep reads the doc as written. Clearer requirement language extracts better, but there's no template to adopt, and the PM stays in Notion.
